Wooden Watches are not only fashionable, they’re also environmentally friendly. WeWood, a producer of stylish wooden watches, plants a tree for each watch they sell. Over the past six years the company has planted almost half a million trees, helping to curtail deforestation. WeWood recently sent Examiner its new Jupiter Black Gold TL wooden watch, and after a month of wearing it we can’t help deny that its a handsome timepiece.
Typically we don’t like to talk about product packaging, however, we can’t help but mention the minimalist boxing used by WeWood: Cardboard made from 100% recycled materials that you can throw in your recycle bin after you’ve removed the watch from the box. Whereas some other companies may try to impress you with their large or elaborate boxes, you know that with WeWood your money is being spent on a quality watch and not paying for a fancy box used for marketing purposes.
The first thing you’ll notice about the WeWood Jupiter Black Gold TL watch is the wood itself. Native to Tasmania’s forests, the Blackwood (Acacia Melanoxylon) is easy to grow and a sustainable resource unlike some other species. This 100% natural wood is hypo-allergenic, and the watch itself is “free of toxic chemicals.” Did we also mention the wood itself looks gorgeous?
Inside the hardened scratch-proof mineral glass there’s not one but two separate Miyota movements, each with their own crown. As a freelancer on the East Coast, this writer set the smaller dial to West Coast time. Having never worn a watch with two different times on it, this writer found this functionality to serve a utilitarian purpose, helping coordinate with business contacts across the country. We can also imagine a father setting the smaller dial to the time zone of their son or daughter. You don’t have to set the dials to different times though. If you find it more aesthetically pleasing to have them display the same time, go for it. What we love about the face is that you can see the same Tasmania Blackwood surrounding the dial, and that the whole face isn’t covered with a cheap plastic covering like some other brands we’ve encountered. The emphasis is on the beauty of the wood itself.
At 1 5/8″ by 2″ (41 mm X 51 mm), and 1.2″ (12.75 mm) thick, the WeWood Jupiter Black Gold TL is a bit on the larger side when it comes to wooden watches. Despite its size, it’s still quite light compared to smaller steel watches thanks to being made out of wood. The WeWood Jupiter Black Gold TL’s band is 9 inches long. You can reduce its length down to 6 3/4 inches by removing the links, and if you were born with an abnormally large wrist WeWood does offer additional links via its website.
We’ve seen a lot of wooden watches lately, and WeWood stands out from the crowd. Aside from its beautiful appearance, the most impressive feature is its price: At $160 you won’t be breaking the bank purchasing the WeWood Jupiter Black Gold TL either for yourself or as a gift for a loved one.
