They were in too deep. Too connected. They needed outside help. Someone who wasn't personally vested. Someone who could look at the situation with fresh eyes. They needed my help to solve a murder.
HuntAKiller.com reached out to me about reviewing one of their mystery boxes. The company produces several different types of stories, some can be bought as an entire gift set while others, such as the "Class of 98" are offered as a monthly subscription service.
The concept is simple, yet masterfully executed. Each monthly box contains an "episode" of the story and it's up to you to solve the murder. Or in this case, rule out potential suspects until you're left with the perpetrator. There's six episodes in the "Class of 98."
As someone who enjoys mystery novels and puzzles in video games, the concept of HuntAKiller.com seemed right up my ally. While I'd like to think I'm smart, the actual puzzle which I received was quite overwhelming. In the first month's box there was a town map, yearbook, letter from an investigator, interviews with witnesses and possibles suspects, a black light, a notebook, and cozy.
In addition to the physical "evidence" that you'll need to sort through to find clues about the case, there's also an online component from the company's website. You can check out my unboxing video here:

Over the course of more than a month I put my detective hat on and tried solve the mystery of episode one. It was really hard! I spent over ten hours pouring through the documents, and even more time thinking about the the puzzle at work. When I thought that I had finally figured out which suspect to rule out, and checked the second subscription box to my dismay I had made the wrong conclusion. With five more episodes to wade through, I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the content. Solving the HuntAKiller.com "Class of 98" is going to take months.
If you enjoy complex puzzles that will take a long time to solve, then "Class of 98" is definitely a product that'll peak your interest. There's an engrossing story, ton of content, and it's not easy. In a world of instant gratification, it's refreshing to sift through a long complex story that will take months to solve. That being said, if you're an impatient person then the "Class of 98" might drive you crazy. If you're tenacious though, solving the mystery for yourself will be very rewarding.
